Overview

Cozumel is an island in the Mexican Caribbean, about 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It is one of the most visited cruise ports in the world, and for good reason: the reefs of Cozumel Reefs National Park are famous for snorkeling and diving, the west coast is lined with calm beaches and beach clubs, and the island's only town, San Miguel de Cozumel, is easy to explore on foot.

Ships dock at one of three piers, and which one you get depends mostly on your cruise line. Pick your line below to see where you'll likely dock and how that shapes your day.

Where your ship docks

Cozumel has three cruise piers. The port assigns berths day by day and your cruise line confirms yours the evening before you arrive, but each line has a clear pattern (based on the Mexican port authority's published schedule for the past 12 months).

Insider tips

  • Watch the clockCozumel is on Eastern Standard Time all year, so from early November to mid-March it is 1 hour ahead of Texas. Always go by your ship's all-aboard time and set your phone to ship time.
  • Be back earlyBe back at the pier at least 30–60 minutes before departure. The ship won't wait for a late independent tour, so leave a buffer.
  • TaxisTaxis wait at every pier. There are no meters: agree on the fare before you get in.
  • CashBring small US bills. Many reef tours collect a small marine park fee in cash, and tips are appreciated.
  • Protect the reefPack reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on or touch the coral.
  • SafetyThe U.S. State Department rates Quintana Roo, Cozumel's state, Level 2: exercise increased caution. Stick to tourist areas, keep valuables out of sight and use the taxis at the piers.
